Description
AMCARE is a community-based (CBO), non-profit organization (NPO) which provides a shelter for abused women and children and also provide young girls and abused women, including their children, with psycho-social support and offer the women training in various skills. The organisation also runs a feeding scheme that supplies bread and soup to HIV, AIDS and TB patients of five Ekurhuleni clinics twice a week as well as feeding 240 children at two high schools in Phola Park, HIV patients and orphans. AMCARE also provides home-based care services for sick people and support for their vulnerable family members and also runs a primary health care facility providing HIV, AIDS and TB-related treatment, care and support services – AMCARE is an accredited anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment initiation and on-going treatment site. A little bit of history In 2001 a vision was born and Rev Neil Robinson and the leaders of the Alberton Methodist Church decided to establish an outreach programme to reach out in love and care to its broader community to feed the hungry, care for the destitute, heal the sick and look after the orphans and the elderly. In March 2001 a steering committee was formed under chair-person of the late Dave Bevan. A social survey of the Alberton community was done and it was decided to provide a shelter for victims of domestic violence, comprehensive HIV and AIDS services and skills development services. A constitution was written by Dr Vernon van Wyk and adopted by the church council on October 13, 2001. An application was made to the Department of Social Development for registration as an NPO. AMCARE (Alberton Methodist Care and Relief Enterprise) was registered with NPO no. 016 772 on January 17, 2002. AMCARE started operations in 2002 in premises adjacent to the Alberton Methodist Church, in what used to be racing stables, and out in the communities.
